Beyond the Classroom: Connecting Health Education with Real-World Practice

A strong education provides students with academic knowledge. But in fields such as public health, understanding how that knowledge is applied requires exposure to real-world systems, programmes, data and professional environments.

Recognising this gap, Forion Analytics collaborated with the School of Health Sciences at Dayananda Sagar University (DSU) to conduct a two-day workshop, “Beyond the Degree: Skills, Systems & Careers in Health Professions.” The workshop brought together students from Public Health, Allied Health Sciences and Community Health backgrounds.

Connecting Learning with Practice

The workshop introduced students to aspects of public health practice that extend beyond conventional classroom learning, including:

• Public health systems and programme implementation
• Digital health and routine health data
• Advocacy and stakeholder engagement
• Communication and professional skills
• Career pathways across the health and development sector

Real-world programme examples, including sanitation, community health engagement and district-level coordination, helped students understand how public health concepts translate into practice.

Learning from Practitioners

The engagement also created opportunities for students to interact with professionals from government, development organisations, consulting and academia, providing perspectives on the diverse roles and challenges within the health ecosystem.

This helped broaden the understanding of public health beyond a purely academic discipline, highlighting the role of systems thinking, data, communication, implementation and stakeholder engagement.

Building the Academic–Practice Interface

The workshop demonstrates the value of bringing real-world experiences into academic environments. By connecting students with practitioners, programme examples and applied learning, educational institutions can help students better understand how their academic knowledge can be applied to real-world health challenges.

The engagement also laid the foundation for continued collaboration between Forion Analytics and DSU through future technical sessions, internships and professional exposure opportunities.
